Pass the Pizza

In just a few easy steps, you can create a game that children from ages 2-5 can play in pairs or with a small group.

I used items I found around the house:  a small used pizza box, a cardboard circle (this 9" diameter circle came pre-cut with our new pots and pans and fit perfectly in the pizza box, but you can also cut one from a cardboard box to fit inside your pizza box), different sized bottle caps, red crafters foam sheets (picked up in the dollar bin at a craft store ages ago), a permanent black fine line marker, a small set of acrylic paints and a few brushes, an old stained white cotton napkin, a bag of dried beans or popcorn seeds, needle and thread (I used a sewing machine) and a plastic zip-lock bag.

Step 1. First, I ironed and cut out a large triangle shape from the cotton napkin.  This will be used for the beanbag prop needed for the game.

Step 2. Then, I mixed acrylic paints to create pizza colors using 3 large bottle caps as palettes. I painted the entire cardboard circle a saucy mix of red and orange, and then mixed white, yellow and brown around the edges to make a golden crust. I topped it off with a yellow and white layer of cheese.

Step 3. Using the paints before they dried out, I painted one half of the large triangle and the top of the other half using the crust color.  I then painted the other half using the cheese color and let it dry before I added the red pepperoni circles.

Step 4. Using a 1-1/2 inch bottle cap, I dipped the cap in the red/orange paint and stamped or printed the circles onto the cardboard circle pizza.

Step 5. While the painted pizzas were drying, I made the playing pieces for the game. Using a 1-1/2 inch bottle cap, I traced and cut twenty circles. I wrote an action such as "Hold the beanbag ABOVE your head" on each circle with a fine tipped permanent marker.  Notice that I wrote that the action was to be done alone or with a partner.  You will find a list of possible actions below, but you can also make up your own.  If I had access to a laminator, I would do this on a computer, print it out and then laminate them on heavy paper.

Step 6. When the painted pizza triangle was dry, I folded the triangle in half and sewed along the edges opposite the folded edge as shown. I then turned it inside out so that it looked like a ice cream cone.  I then filled the cone with popcorn seeds (but you can use any type of dried bean). Once it was filled, I tucked in the edges and pinned it, then stitched along the top.  Voila! A pizza-shaped beanbag.

Step 7. Place the red playing pieces in a zip-lock bag and store the pizza bean bag and cardboard pizza circle in the pizza box.

You are ready to play...

1. Turn all the red circle pepperoni pieces over so the written actions are face down.

2. The first player chooses a red circle pepperoni piece and performs the action alone or with a partner, as indicated.  If the child is an emerging reader, an adult can read the action to be performed.

3. After the action is performed using the bean bag pizza, the player places the red circle pepperoni piece with the writing face down on the cardboard pizza as shown.

4. Each of the next players take turns performing the actions and placing the red circle pepperoni pieces on the cardboard pizza.  When all circles on the cardboard pizza are covered, the game is over.  Everyone wins!
